Don't miss

A private jeep at 5:15am — you'll see leopards before the crowds arrive.

What to do

  • Dawn safari in Block 1 for leopards
  • Afternoon safari in less-crowded Block 5
  • Sithulpawwa rock temple
  • Elephant herds at Kumana lagoon

Where to eat

  • Any beach hotel curry buffet in Tissamaharama
  • Refresh Restaurant Tissa

Insider tips

  • Block 1 is crowded — ask for Block 5 for the same wildlife, half the jeeps
  • Park closes Sep 1 to mid-Oct for animal breeding
  • Bring binoculars — leopards are usually 100m+ away
  • Whisper only, don't stand up, no drones

Watch out for

  • 'Guaranteed leopard' tours are lies — never pay a premium for it
  • Wild elephants have killed tourists in Yala — do not leave the jeep

Getting there

5 hours by car from Colombo; 2 hours from Ella. Stay in Tissamaharama.
